Here’s what I submitted to the Director of SFSU’s School of Nursing

My name is Kristine, and I am in the fifth semester of my graduate nursing program at San Francisco State University (SFSU). I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with an emphasis in Pre-Med at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA in 2009. I previously worked in the non-profit industry as the Assistant Director of Programming for the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, exposing the students of the after-school program to science and critical thinking. I then ventured into pharmaceutical research at Genentech and worked alongside several clinical study coordinators, managing pulmonary and breast cancer clinical trials. During my post-baccalaureate, I realized nursing fulfilled my desire to closely interact with people as a deliverer of medical and emotional care while forming valuable, nurturing relationships.

In the fall of 2010, I was fortunately accepted to SFSU’s Generic Master of Science in Nursing (GMSN) program, leaving my job at Genentech to pursue my passion for nursing. Throughout the course of SFSU’s nursing program, I have recognized the importance of dedication and leadership as a nursing student. For the past two years, I have been an active executive board member of the Nursing Student Association. As Community Health Director, I helped plan a medical campaign to Cusco, Peru this past March for 28 nursing students. I also planned several Bay Area-wide community outreach volunteer events, such as the semiannual blood drives with the Blood Centers of the Pacific, the San Francisco Liver Life Walk, and a holiday food drive through the San Francisco Food Bank. As the current GMSN representative, I act as an advocate for the concerns and suggestions voiced by the GMSN students. I am also currently coordinating workshops this school year to enhance the professional skills of the graduate students, in hopes of better preparing them for their job search in today’s competitive nursing market.

Furthermore, throughout the course of my pre-licensure curriculum, I discovered my passion for women’s heath, which is my emphasis for my clinical nurse specialty. I am currently volunteering once a week for San Francisco’s Women’s Community Clinic, a volunteer-based nurse-managed clinic that offers free health care and street outreach services to uninsured and low-income women and girls in the Bay Area. Also, I am currently a volunteer doula at the Homeless Prenatal Program, supporting low-income families throughout the course of pregnancy and providing them access to the benefits of doula care at no cost. Ultimately, I plan on working as a bedside nurse on a labor and delivery unit upon graduation. Further along into my nursing career, I plan to become a women’s health nurse practitioner, endorsing women’s heath promotion and disease prevention especially for those in need of care in the community.

My passion to serve others and cultural competence as a community health and women’s health advocate personify the mission of SFSU’s GMSN program. During my time in this program, the curriculum and faculty have diligently guided me and developed and enhanced my passion for nursing. I look forward to taking what I learn here at SFSU to the hospital as an advanced practice nurse.
